Background Information

Cancer is a general term that describes the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body.

Early detection is key. If not removed, these cells invade and destroy surrounding tissue and travel to other parts of the body where they can grow and become new cancerous tumors.

With breast cancer affecting one out of every eight women during their lifetime, the need for accurate, early detection is more important than ever.

More than 90 percent of women whose breast cancer is found and treated early will survive.

Early warning signs of breast cancer:

  • A lump or thickening in the breast or under the arm.
  • Discharge from the nipple.
  • A change in breast size or shape.
  • A change in the color or feel of the skin or nipple, such as dimpling, puckering or scaliness.

See your doctor immediately if you develop any of these signs.

To detect an abnormality, you should perform a self-examination monthly and have an exam by a doctor or nurse annually.

If you are over 40 years old, the American Cancer Society recommends that you should have a mammogram (breast imaging) each year.

Mammograms help to detect non-palpable lesions, which are tissue abnormalities that cannot be felt.

Glossary of Key Terms:

Benign: Not cancerous
Malignant: Cancerous
Microcalcifications: Tiny specks of calcium that may indicate the presence of a small cancer.
Stereotactic Guidance: X-ray imaging from two angles that assists in directing an instrument.
Ultrasound Guidance: Inaudible sound waves that produce an outline of tissues and organs, helping to guide an instrument.
