David Lind, MD - Pap Smear

Q: Is an annual pap smear still important?

A: If you’re like most women, the trip to your gynecologist for your annual “pap smear” is not something you look forward to.

But overcoming your reluctance could save your life.

The pap test is the most widely-used procedure for detecting cervical cancer.

It has been instrumental in dramatically lowering the death rate from this terrible disease.
The test involves removing a sample of cells from around the cervix. These cell samples are smeared on a glass slide and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

If the laboratory results indicate the presence of pre-cancerous cells, your doctor has a variety of simple procedures he can use to eliminate the cells while they are still confined.

By scheduling your regular gynecologic exams annually, you can help your physician detect and treat cervical cancer in its earliest stages.

David M. Lind, MD, is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Lind is in private practice and is one of many physicians living and practicing medicine full-time in Cheyenne.
